Our experts share their tips and tricks to boost your chances of selling
Posting an ad on Gumtree is super simple but there’s a big difference between a good ad and a great ad. In order to boost ad views, attract serious buyers and make your ad stand out from the crowd, simply follow the ad optimisation advice of the Gumtree team.
Ad title
Writing a clear and concise ad title is the first step in creating a great ad. Don’t forget, the ad title will influence whether or not potential buyers will open and view your ad, so it’s crucial to master this step.
We recommend making the title as descriptive as possible by including specific details about the item you are selling. You’ve got 100 characters to play with so be sure to include the brand, model number, colour and key features where relevant.
It’s important to remember that many Gumtree users use the “search” tool to find what they are looking for, so try to include pertinent keywords and search terms in your ad title to maximise the chances of your ad being found.
Description
The ad description is your chance to convince prospective buyers to purchase your item so including item specifics and production information here is paramount. We recommend including the brand, model number, size, dimensions, colour, manufacture date and other key features as well as the item’s condition and history.
In some cases, it may be worth getting your creative juices flowing. An engaging ad with a bit of personality will hold the interest of potential buyers for longer and may prompt them to reply!
Don’t forget, spelling and grammar also count when it comes to the quality of your ad description. Double or even triple check your submissions and avoid writing all in caps or using excessive punctuation such as exclamation marks.
Photos
The oft-quoted saying “a picture is worth a 1000 words” is especially true when it comes to online classifieds. Some Gumtree users don’t bother to look at ads without images so including a few snaps of the item you are selling could drastically improve the likelihood that your ad will be viewed and that more prospective buyers will respond to it.
Uploading great quality shots is essential so if possible, try to capture well-lit, clearly-focussed and uncluttered images that show off the item you are selling in the best way possible.
You can upload up to 12 pictures and it’s worth taking advantage of this by including shots taken from different angles and close-ups of key selling points like the brand name and model number.
