First time on Gumtree? Let’s get started!

Gumtree is a classifieds site that allows ordinary South Africans to access the power of the Internet by placing their own ads or responding to the thousands of ads currently available. You can use Gumtree to search for jobs and cars, buy new and used furniture and sporting goods or advertise your small business or unwanted goods (and much more!)

Do you want to use Gumtree to buy stuff?

It’s easy! Let’s say you are interested in buying a Car. Click on the category you are interested in, in this case, Automotive Vehicles.
 

This will take you to a page with all the Automotive Vehicle ads on Gumtree. You don’t want to browse through all the ads, so narrow your search by clicking on “Cars & Bakkies” on the left hand of the page. Then you can further narrow your search by clicking on a specific car make. You can find cars in your area by clicking on your home province on the left hand of the page where it says “Locations”. Click on the ads that you like to view more pictures and a description.

You can also save time by typing the type of car you are looking for in the block where it reads “What are you looking for?” on the top of the Gumtree home page.

Once you’ve found something you would like to buy, you can contact the seller directly by filling in the contact form on the right side of the ad. Click “Send”. The seller will receive your message and get back to you. Once he/she contacts you, you can negotiate collection and payment.Be sure to read our Safety Tips before proceeding!

Do you want to sell stuff?

Perhaps you have stuff lying around the house that you want to sell. It’s a great way to declutter and make money.
In this case, click on the orange “POST FREE AD” button on the top of the homepage. It will take you to a page that will ask you to select your category. This will be where your ad will appear. If you are selling a cell phone, you would choose “Electronics”, but if you were selling a cot, you would select “Baby and Kids”.The Electronics and Baby and Kids categories are located under the "Goods" option.

Once you’ve chosen your category, you need to fill in another form and upload some photos. Try to use 3-5 different images. When writing a description, tell the buyer as much as possible about the item – how old it is, if it’s been used, if it has any damage, why you are selling, etc. Don’t put any personal information (like your banking details or ID number) in the ad.

When you have filled in the form, click on the POST AD button to complete it. Be sure to read our Safety Tips before proceeding!
